หากถามว่าศาสนาประจำชาติญี่ปุ่นคือศาสนาใด มองผิวเผินทั่วไปหลายคนอาจตอบว่าศาสนาพุทธ แต่หากใครที่รู้จักญี่ปุ่นลึกซึ้งมากขึ้นอาจตอบว่าศาสนาชินโตเพราะนี่คือศาสนาเก่าแก่ดั้งเดิมที่ถือกำเนิดในดินแดนนี้ ทว่าในอีกมิติญี่ปุ่นก็กลับมีโบสถ์คริสต์เลื่องชื่อกระจายตัวอยู่มากมายตลอดจนคนญี่ปุ่นยุคใหม่เองยังนิยมแต่งงานแบบสากลในโบสถ์คริสต์มากขึ้นด้วย นั่นยังไม่รวมถึงการนับถือลัทธิต่างๆ ที่ซ่อนเร้นแฝงตัวอยู่มากมายในสังคมญี่ปุ่น ตลอดจนเริ่มมีกระแสสวนกลับของคนรุ่นใหม่ที่มีแนวโน้มไม่นับถือศาสนาใดๆ เลยเพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกวัน
นั่นทำให้เกิดคำถามว่าแท้จริงแล้วคนญี่ปุ่นทุกวันนี้นับถืออะไรกันแน่ระหว่าง “เทพเจ้า”, “พระพุทธเจ้า”, หรือ “พระเจ้า” … หรือแท้จริงแล้วหมดศรัทธาในความเชื่อใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น
มรดกศรัทธาแห่งวิถีตะวันออก
หากจะทำความเข้าใจถึงรากเหง้าแห่งความเชื่อและศรัทธาของชาวญี่ปุ่นคงต้องย้อนกลับไปเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่อดีต อย่างที่รู้กันดีกว่าศาสนาดั้งเดิมของดินแดนแห่งนี้ก็คือ “ศาสนาชินโต (Shinto / 神道)” ซึ่งแปลตรงตัวได้ว่า “วิถีแห่งการนับถือเทพเจ้า” นั่นเอง ไม่มีหลักฐานแน่ชัดว่าศาสนาชินโตนั้นเกิดขึ้นเมื่อใดแต่จากข้อมูลที่ค้นได้สันนิษฐานได้ว่าความเชื่อดั้งเดิมนี้น่าจะเริ่มมาตั้งแต่สมัยยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ของญี่ปุ่น (ราว 1,000 ปี ก่อนคริสตกาล) ซึ่งในยุคนั้นคนโบราณถิ่นนี้ต่างเชื่อในเรื่องของวิญญาณตลอดจนผูกพันกับธรรมชาติเป็นหนึ่งเดียวที่เกี่ยวโยงสู่การนับถือเทพเจ้า ชาวญี่ปุ่นเรียกเทพเจ้าว่า “คามิ (Kami / 神)“ และเชื่อว่าทุกหนแห่งนั้นมีคามิสิงสถิตอยู่ เทพทุกองค์เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกับธรรมชาติและการเคารพบูชาเทพเจ้านั้นก็คือการเคารพนับถือธรรมชาติด้วยนั่นเอง และนั่นเป็นสิ่งที่ฝังอยู่ในดีเอ็นเอคนญี่ปุ่นสืบมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
สำหรับคามิที่รู้จักแพร่หลายและได้รับการเคารพสูงสุดก็คือเทพี “อะมาเตราซึ (Amaterasu Omikami /天照大御神)” ผู้เป็นสริยะเทพี (Goddess of the Sun) หรือเทพแห่งดวงอาทิตย์ที่ในตำนานญี่ปุ่นยกย่องว่าเป็นเทพองค์สูงสุดวิหารชินโตเหนือกว่าเทพองค์อื่นทั้งปวง นอกจากนี้ตามตำนานองค์เทพีนี้ก็ยังถือเป็นบรรพบุรุษต้นตระกูลของราชวงศ์ญี่ปุ่นอีกด้วย
ในญี่ปุ่นนั้นมีศาลเจ้าชินโตกระจายตัวอยู่ทั่วประเทศและมีศาลเจ้าที่สร้างอุทิศถวายเทพีอะมาเตราซึมากมาย ทว่าศาลเจ้าประธานอันเป็นเสมือนหัวหน้าศาลเจ้าทั้งปวงนั้นก็คือ ศาลเจ้าอิเซะ (Ise Jingu / 伊勢神宮) ใน จ.มิเอะ ซึ่งก็เป็นที่สถิตของเทพีอะมาเตราซึและถือเป็นศาลเจ้าศักดิ์สิทธิ์สูงสุดในญี่ปุ่นอีกด้วย
นอกจากจะเป็นศาลเจ้าหลักแล้วก็ยังมีการสืบสานประเพณี ซิคิเน็นเซ็นกุ (Shikinen Sengu / 式年遷宮) อันเป็นประเพณีต่ออายุศาลเจ้าซึ่งจะทำการรื้อและสร้างศาลเจ้าขึ้นใหม่ในทุกๆ 20 ปี วิธีการนี้นอกจากจะต้องการทำให้ศาลเจ้าดูมีชีวิตชีวาและใหม่ตามยุคสมัยเสมอแล้วก็ยังเป็นอุบายในการถ่ายทอดภูมิปัญญาความรู้ดั้งเดิมจากอดีตสู่ปัจจุบันได้อย่างดีเยี่ยมทีเดียว
อีกหนึ่งศาสนาที่มีอิทธิพลต่อญี่ปุ่นเป็นอย่างมากก็คือศาสนาพุทธ ซึ่งพุทธศาสนาในญี่ปุ่นนั้นเป็นสายนิกายมหายาน (Daijo Bukkyo / 大乗仏教) ที่พัฒนามาจนกลายมาเป็นรูปแบบเฉพาะตัว “ศาสนาพุทธแห่งญี่ปุ่น (Nihon no Bukkyo / 日本の仏教)” ถึงแม้ว่าพุทธศาสนาจะถือกำเนิดในอินเดียแต่ญี่ปุ่นนั้นกลับได้รับเอาอิทธิพลด้านนี้มาจากทางประเทศจีนอีกทีหนึ่ง ศาสนาพุทธแถบนี้เป็นนิกายมหายานที่เริ่มแผ่อิทธิพลเข้าในในญี่ปุ่นราวช่วงศตวรรษที่ 6 ตรงกับยุคอะซึกะ (Asuka period; ค.ศ.538-710) โดยมีศูนย์กลางการปกครองอยู่แถบจังหวัดนาระในปัจจุบัน
ทำให้พื้นที่บริเวณนี้จึงเต็มไปด้วยวัดวาอารามเก่าแก่มากมายซึ่งก็รวมถึง วัดโทไดจิ (Todaiji / 東大寺) อันโด่งดังและ วัดโฮริวจิ (Horyuji / 法隆寺) หนึ่งในพุทธสถานอันเก่าแก่ที่สุดในญี่ปุ่นซึ่งนอกจากจะมีอาคารไม้หลังใหญ่ที่ได้รับการบันทึกว่าเป็นหนึ่งในสถาปัตยกรรมไม้ที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลกที่ยังหลงเหลืออยู่ในยุคปัจจุบันแล้วบริเวณนี้ยังที่ได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลก (UNESCO World Heritage Site) แห่งแรกของญี่ปุ่นด้วยเช่นกัน
ศาสนาพุทธจากจีนนั้นยังผสมผสานหลักการลัทธิขงจื๊อ (Confucianism / 儒教) เข้ามาพร้อมกันด้วยซึ่งโดยส่วนมากเป็นเรื่องของจริยธรรมและการปกครอง นั่นทำให้กลายเป็นอีกหนึ่งความเชื่อที่ฝังรากและเติบโตในญี่ปุ่นควบคู่กันมา ทว่าช่วงเวลานั้นความน่าสนใจอยู่ตรงที่ว่าแทนที่ศาสนาเหล่านี้จะขัดแย้งกันแต่กลับผสมผสานเข้ากับความเชื่อดั้งเดิมได้อย่างลงตัวจนทำให้เกิดเป็นพุทธศาสนาที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะตัวในแบบญี่ปุ่นสืบมาถึงปัจจุบัน
จากความเชื่อต้องห้ามสู่ศรัทธาร่วมสมัย
ญี่ปุ่นมีลักษณะเป็นเกาะและปิดประเทศมานานดังนั้นความเชื่อและศรัทธาตามแบบวัฒนธรรมตะวันออกจึงฝังรากลึกและยืนหยัดแข็งแกร่งเป็นอย่างมากทว่าเมื่อญี่ปุ่นจำเป็นต้องเปิดประเทศทำให้ต้องเริ่มรับเอาอิทธิพลของวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกเข้ามาอย่างเสียมิได้ และนั่นก็เป็นจุดเปลี่ยนหนึ่งของการสั่นคลอนพลังศรัทธาในญี่ปุ่นครั้งใหญ่เช่นกัน
ในช่วงที่ญี่ปุ่นยังปิดประเทศนั้นชาติตะวันตกเพียงชาติเดียวที่ได้รับการยอมรับจากญี่ปุ่นก็คือโปรตุเกส ญี่ปุ่นอนุญาตให้ชาวโปรตุเกสเข้ามาค้าขายกับตนได้แต่ก็จำกัดพื้นที่ให้ขึ้นฝั่งได้เพียงจุดเดียวคือเมืองท่านางาซากิบนเกาะคิวชูเท่านั้น อันที่จริงแล้วเรือสำเภาจากโปรตุเกสแล่นเข้าสู่น่านน้ำญี่ปุ่นและขึ้นแผ่นดินครั้งแรกที่ เกาะทาเนะกะชิมะ (Tanegashima / 種子島) จ.คาโกชิมะ ในปี ค.ศ.1543 ทว่าการเผยแผ่คริสต์ศาสนาเริ่มเข้ามาอย่างเป็นทางการหลังจากช่วงเวลานั้นอีกราว 5 ปี
โดยผู้ที่เข้ามาก่อร่างสร้างฐานให้กับคริสต์ศาสนาก็คือบาทหลวง Francis Xavier ที่ขึ้นแผ่นดินญี่ปุ่นเป็นครั้งแรกบน เกาะฮิราโดะ (Hirado Island / 平戸島) จ.นางาซากิ นั่นเลยทำให้เกาะแห่งนี้เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการวางรากฐานศาสนาคริสต์ในญี่ปุ่นก่อนที่จะเผยแผ่ไปทั่วเกาะคิวชูอย่างรวดเร็วและนั่นทำให้ภูมิภาคนี้กลายมาเป็นศูนย์กลางของศาสนาคริสต์ในญี่ปุ่นจนถึงทุกวันนี้ด้วย
ในช่วงแรกนั้นคริสต์ศาสนิกชนต้องเผยแผ่กันแบบหลบๆ ซ่อนๆ จนถูกเรียกว่า “คาคุเระ คิริชิตัน (隠れキリシタン) หรือ Hidden Christians ประกอบกับยุคนั้นมีชาวญี่ปุ่นเริ่มเปลี่ยนมานับถือศาสนาคริสต์เป็นจำนวนมากจนทำให้โชกุนโตกุกาวะ อิเอยาสุ (徳川家康) เกรงกลัวว่าจะสร้างผลกระทบต่อเสถียรภาพทางการเมืองและการปกครองประเทศ จึงมีการออกประกาศห้ามเผยแผ่และนับถือศาสนาคริสต์นับแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา ทำให้ศาสนาคริสต์เป็นศาสนาต้องห้ามและชาวคริสต์ยุคนั้นต้องปิดบังความเชื่อของตนเองไว้เป็นความลับ รวมถึงเริ่มมีการผสมผสานพิธีกรรมทางคริสต์ศาสนาเข้ากับวิถีแบบชินโตและพุทธอย่างกลมกลืนซึ่งด้านหนึ่งคือการปรับให้เข้ากับวิถีท้องถิ่นแต่อีกด้านก็เพื่อตบตาให้อยู่รอดปลอดภัยด้วย นั่นเองที่ทำให้เกิดศาสนาคริสต์ในรูปแบบญี่ปุ่นที่มีความเฉพาะตัวไม่เหมือนใครด้วยเช่นกัน
ถึงแม้จะมีการเผยแผ่มานานแต่ก็ไม่ปรากฎหลักฐานว่าในยุคแรกๆ มีการสร้างโบสถ์ขึ้นหรือไม่ ทว่าโบสถ์คริสต์ที่ได้รับการบันทึกว่าเก่าแก่ที่สุดในญี่ปุ่นนั้นก็คือโบสถ์โออุระ (Oura Church / 大浦天主堂) ใน จ.นางาซากิ ที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรกในปี ค.ศ.1865 และภายหลังการการปฏิวัติเมจิ (Meiji Revolution) ในปี ค.ศ.1868 ที่ทำให้ญี่ปุ่นต้องเปิดเสรีภาพในการนับถือศาสนาไปพร้อมกันด้วยทำให้คนญี่ปุ่นสามารถนับถือคริสต์ได้อย่างเปิดเผยและนั่นก็ทำให้มีการบูรณะสร้างโบสถ์แห่งนี้ใหมีอีกครั้งจนใหญ่โตสง่างามอย่างปัจจุบัน ซึ่งทุกวันนี้โบสถ์อันเก่าแก่นี้ก็ได้รับการบันทึกให้เป็นมรดกโลก (UNESCO World Heritage Site) อีกชิ้นที่มีความสำคัญต่อประวัติศาสตร์ญี่ปุ่นและกลายเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวเลื่องชื่อของนางาซากิด้วย
นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีการสร้าง โบสถ์อนุสรณ์เซนต์ฟรานซิสซาเวียร์ (St. Francis Xavior Memorial Church / 山口サビエル記念聖堂) ขึ้นในปีค.ศ.1913 (และย้ายมาอยู่สถานที่ปัจจุบันในปี ค.ศ.1931) บนเกาะฮิราโดะอันเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นแรกของคริสต์ศาสนาในญี่ปุ่นด้วยซึ่งทุกวันนี้ก็กลายสถานที่ทรงคุณค่าและเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยมด้วยเช่นกัน
หลังจากการปฏิวัติเมจิเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ทำให้มีมิชชันนารีจากทางฝั่งตะวันตกเข้ามาเผยแผ่ศาสนาคริสต์เพิ่งขึ้นมากมาย ตลอดจนทำให้ความเชื่อและศาสตร์สายตะวันตกต่างๆ เข้ามาผสมกลมกลืนกับความเป็นตะวันออกมากขึ้นเรื่อย ประกอบกับเดิมทีชาวญี่ปุ่นต้องปรับศาสนาคริสต์ให้กลมกลืนกับวิถีตนเพื่อความอยู่รอดมาก่อน เมื่อการนับถือศาสนาคริสต์สามารถเปิดเผยได้แล้วศาสนาจึงปรับตัวให้เข้ากับวิถีท้องถิ่นจนกลายเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวได้อย่างรวดเร็ว

นอกจากนี้ศาสนาคริสต์ยุคนั้นยังมีอิทธิพลต่อการพลิกโฉมหน้าญี่ปุ่นเป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะด้านการศึกษาที่กลายมาเป็นหนึ่งในรากฐานสำคัญของการพัฒนาประเทศ ตลอดจนองค์ความรู้แบบตะวันตกอื่นๆ ก็แทรกซึมจนหลอมเป็นเนื้อเดียวกับวัฒนธรรมรากเหง้าดั้งเดิมอย่างกลมกลืน
ถึงแม้ว่าจากสถิติคนญี่ปุ่นจะนับถือศาสนาคริสต์เพียง 1% เท่านั้นแต่จำนวนน้อยนิดนี้ก็กลับทรงอิทธิพลอย่างแข็งแกร่งทีเดียว ปัจจุบันญี่ปุ่นมีโบสถ์คริสต์กระจายตัวอยู่มากมายทั่วประเทศ และความชาญฉลาดอันแสนแยบยลในการสร้างมูลค่าให้กับคริสต์ศาสนาในญี่ปุ่นก็คือการผสานองค์ความรู้ด้านสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่เข้าไปกับการสร้างโบสถ์ในดีไซน์ทันสมัยที่แสนโดดเด่น
นั่นจึงทำให้ญี่ปุ่นเป็นเสมือนเวทีโชว์ผลงานสถาปัตยกรรมชิ้นเอกของคริสต์ศาสนายุคใหม่ของโลก มีโบสถ์คริสต์ยุคใหม่ที่ขับเคลื่อนด้วยดีไซน์และสถาปัตยกรรมเกิดขึ้นบนเกาะญี่ปุ่นมากมาย แล้วนั่นก็กลายมาเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวโด่งดังระดับโลกในเวลาต่อมาด้วยเช่นกัน ตัวอย่างก็เช่น Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tokyo (カトリック東京大司教区) โบสถ์อาวองการ์ดดีไซน์ล้ำสุดคลาสสิกกลางกรุงโตเกียว หรือสถาปัตยกรรมระดับไอคอนิกอย่าง โบสถ์อิบารากิ คาซูกาโอกะ (Ibaraki Kasugaoka Kyokai / 茨木春日丘教会) หรือที่ทั่วโลกรู้จักกันในนาม Church of Light ที่ตั้งอยู่ในเมืองอิบารากิ จ.โอซากา อันเป็นผลงานมาสเตอร์พีชของ ทาดาโอะ อันโด (Tadao Ando / 安藤 忠雄) สถาปนิกญี่ปุ่นผู้โด่งดังระดับโลกที่ใครก็อยากมาเยือน หรือจะเป็น Ribbon Chapel (リボンチャペル) โบสถ์ทรงเกลียวดีไซน์แปลกตาจากฝีมือการออกแบบของ Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP ที่ตั้งอยู่บนยอดเขาหนึ่งในเมืองโอโนะมิจิ จ.ฮิโรชิม่า มองเห็นวิวสวยของท้องทะเลในเซ็ตโตะอย่างงดงามสุดลูกหูลูกตา แล้วที่นี่ก็คือหมุดหมายของการแต่งงานที่โด่งดังอันดับต้นๆ ของญี่ปุ่นในยุคนี้เลยทีเดียว
ศาสนาคริสต์น่าจะเป็นอีกตัวอย่างที่สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของคนญี่ปุ่นอันโดดเด่นในการผสานวัฒธรรมต่างถิ่นให้เข้ากับวิถีตนซึ่งก็รวมถึงความเชื่อต่างศาสนาด้วยที่เมื่อเข้ามาดินแดนอาทิตย์อุทัยแล้วก็จะมีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะถิ่นที่ไม่เหมือนใคร
ลัทธิและศาสนาใหม่กับทางเลือกแห่งความหวังที่เริ่มมืดมน
นอกจากศาสนากระแสหลักแล้วญี่ปุ่นยังเต็มไปด้วยความเชื่อกระแสรองที่ก่อให้เกิดลัทธิต่างๆ และศาสนาใหม่ขึ้นมากมาย โดยเฉพาะช่วงปลายศตวรรษที่ 19 ถึงต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 อันเป็นช่วงเวลาที่สังคมญี่ปุ่นพัฒนาก้าวไกลเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างก้าวกระโดดก็เริ่มมีทางเลือกของศรัทธาหลากรูปแบบเกิดขึ้น
ความศรัทธาลักษณะนี้เรียกตามหลักสากลว่า New Religious Movement (NRM) หรือ ชินชูเคียว (Shinshukyo / 新宗教) ที่แปลว่าศาสนาใหม่แห่งญี่ปุ่นนั่นเอง ในญี่ปุ่นมีชินชูเคียวเกิดขึ้นมากมายหลากหลายความเชื่อ บ้างแตกย่อยและต่อยอดมาจากศาสนาต่างๆ บ้างก็ตั้งขึ้นจากความเชื่อและบรรทัดฐานเฉพาะตัวที่เห็นชอบร่วมกัน ดังเช่นลัทธิตลอดจนความเชื่อดังต่อไปนี้
- Church of World Messianity (世界救世教): ศาสนาใหม่นี้คนไทย (และสากล) อาจคุ้นกันในอีกชื่อว่า “โยเร (Johrei / 浄霊)” เสียมากกว่า ศาสนาใหม่ของญี่ปุ่นนี้รู้จักกันแพร่หลายไปทั่วโลก ถือกำเนิดขึ้นในปี ค.ศ.1935 ด้วยการนำเอาหลักของศาสนาชินโตผสมผสานกับศาสนาพุทธนิกายมหายานและหลอมรวมกับจริยธรรมสากล นอกจากยึดถึงในแนวคิดทำความดีแล้วลัทธินี้ยังเชื่อในเรื่องฝ่ามือถ่ายทอดพลังอีกด้วย ผู้ที่ฝึกฝนและศรัทธาในระดับสูงสามารถจะปล่อย “แสงทิพย์” เพื่อรักษาโรคร้ายให้กับผู้อื่นได้
- PL Kyodan หรือ Church of Perfect Liberty (パーフェクト リバティー教団): ศาสนาใหม่นี้ก่อตั้งในปี ค.ศ.1924 โดยพัฒนามาจากศาสนาพุทธนิกายเซ็นและมุ่งเน้นคำสอนเกี่ยวกับสันติภาพ ลัทธินี้ก่อตั้งโรงเรียน PL学園 (พีแอลกักคุเอ็น / PL Gakuen) ที่โด่งดังในเรื่องเบสบอลเป็นอย่างมาก ตลอดจนมีศาสนาสถานสำคัญอย่าง Dai Heiwa Kinen To (大平和祈念塔) ใน จ.โอซาก้า หอคอยสวดมนต์เพื่อสันติภาพอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่สร้างเสมือนผลงานประติมากรรมศิลป์ดีไซน์แปลกตา
- โอมชินริเคียว (Aum Shinrikyo / オウム真理教): อีกหนึ่งลัทธิดังแหวกขนบของญี่ปุ่นที่มีสาวกแทรกซึมกระจายอยู่ทั่วโลก ทว่าเรื่องราวที่ทำให้ลัทธินี้โด่งดังมากที่สุดกลับกลายเป็นเรื่องเสื่อมเสียอื้อฉาวช็อกโลกอย่างเหตุการณ์ก่อการร้ายปล่อยก๊าซพิษรมควันผู้คนในกรุงโตเกียวเมื่อปี ค.ศ.1995 เหตุการณ์นี้นอกจากจะสร้างบาดแผลฝังลึกให้กับสังคมญี่ปุ่นตลอดจนสร้างความหวาดกลัวฝังในใจคนทั่วโลกมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้แล้ว นี่ยังเป็นจุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญที่ทำให้คนทั่วโลกเริ่มหวาดระแวงความเชื่อใหม่ๆ เปลี่ยนมุมมองและมีทัศนคติเชิงลบกับคำว่า “ลัทธิ” มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ด้วย
หรือแม้แต่ข่าวเศร้าที่เพิ่งเกิดขึ้นไม่นานนี้เมื่อสมาชิกของลัทธิ Unification Church อันเป็นศาสนาใหม่ที่แตกยอดมาจากคริสต์ศาสนาทำการรอบสังหารนายกรัฐมนตรี ชินโซ อาเบะ (Shinzo Abe) จนเสียชีวิตซึ่งเบื้องหลังการก่อเหตุสะเทือนขวัญนี้ก็โยงใยไปถึงเรื่องความเชื่อและศรัทธาใหม่นี้ด้วยเช่นกัน นั่นเป็นส่วนสำคัญที่ทำให้คนทั่วไปมอง “ลัทธิ” เป็นแง่ลบมากกว่าจะเปิดใจศรัทธา

นับจากการเปิดประเทศหลังยุคเมจิคนญี่ปุ่นมีเสรีภาพในศรัทธาเกิดขึ้นมากมาย ทว่าท่ามกลางความหลากหลายในยุคปัจจุบันนี้กลับไม่ใช่ทางเลือกที่ต้องการของคนยุคใหม่เสียแล้ว นั่นจึงทำให้เกิดปรากฏการณ์ของคน “ไม่มีศาสนา” เพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกวัน
ปรากฎการณ์ไม่นับถือศาสนาใดนี้ถูกเรียกว่า “มุชูเคียว (Mushukyo / 無宗教)” หรือแปลว่า ไม่มีศาสนา (Non-religion) คำนี้กำลังกลายเป็นเทรนด์ร่วมสมัยในสังคมญี่ปุ่นยุคนี้เฉกเช่นเดียวกันกับกระแสของคนยุคใหม่ทั่วโลกที่เริ่มระบุตัวตนว่าไม่นับถือศาสนาเพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกวัน ถึงแม้จะมีข้อมูลว่าคนญี่ปุ่นนับถือศาสนาชินโตและศาสนาพุทธมากที่สุดในอัตราส่วนเกือบจะเท่ากันซึ่งรวมกันแล้วมากถึงกว่า 90% ของประชากรทั้งประเทศเลยทีเดียว ทว่าจากผลการสำรวจล่าสุดเมื่อต้นปี ค.ศ.2024 ของสถาบันวิจัยสังคมนานาชาติ (International Social Survey Programme (ISSP)) กลับพบกว่าคนญี่ปุ่น (โดยเฉพาะคนรุ่นใหม่) มากถึง 68% ระบุตัวเองว่าเป็นมุชูเคียว แล้วตัวเลขนี้ยังมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้นทุกปีอีกด้วย
จริงอยู่ว่าการระบุตัวตัวว่าไม่มีศาสนานั้นอาจไม่ได้หมายถึงการปฏิเสธศรัทธาและความเชื่อเสมอไป บางมุมอาจหมายถึงไม่อยากเลือกผูกมัดอยู่กับศาสนาใดศาสนาหนึ่งเท่านั้นแต่เลือกที่จะนำคำสอนที่ดีของหลากหลายศาสนามาปรับใช้กับตน หรือหากลงลึกในข้อมูลไปอีกก็จะพบว่ากว่า 92% ของมุชูเคียวในญี่ปุ่นถึงแม้ไม่นับถือศาสนาใดเป็นพิเศษแต่ก็ยังคงไปเข้าร่วมพิธีไหว้ศาลเจ้าขอพระในวันปีใหม่ เข้าพิธีแต่งงานในโบสถ์คริสต์ รวมถึงซื้อเครื่องรางติดตัวเพื่อเสริมสิริมงคลให้กับตัวเองเช่นกัน ซึ่งคนรุ่นใหม่เหล่านี้อาจไม่ได้มองเรื่องพวกนี้เป็นเรื่องของศาสนาทว่ามองในมิติของวิถีชีวิต วัฒนธรรมประเพณี และค่านิยมในสังคมเสียมากกว่า หรือยิ่งไปกว่านั้นพวกเขาอาจมองแค่ว่าศาสนสถานก็เป็นเพียงสถานที่แห่งหนึ่ง (ที่แค่แวะไปเที่ยวหรือขอพร) เท่านั้นเอง
ศรัทธาแปลงโฉมและการปรับตัวสู่ศาสนายุคใหม่
โลกยุคศตวรรษที่ 21 ไม่ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเฉพาะด้านเทคโนโลยีเท่านั้นทว่าศาสนาและความเชื่อต่างก็มีการปรับตัวเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งใหญ่เพื่อก้าวทันยุคใหม่เช่นกัน โดยเฉพาะในประเทศญี่ปุ่นที่ความอนุรักษ์นิยมสุดโต่งอยู่ร่วมกับความล้ำสมัยอย่างกลมกลืนทำให้การปฏิวัติทางศาสนาแบบแนวคิดยุคใหม่เกิดขึ้นได้ไวและได้รับการยอมรับอย่างรวดเร็ว
พระกับสตรีและความสวยงาม
อย่างที่รู้กันดีว่าพระญี่ปุ่นสามารถแต่งงานมีครอบครัวได้ขณะเดียวกันครอบครัวของเจ้าอาวาสก็สามารถประกอบธุรกิจด้านศาสนาได้อย่างไม่ผิดธรรมเนียม นอกจากบทบาททางศาสนาแล้วพระญี่ปุ่นยังสามารถมีสถานะอื่นในเวลาเดียวกันเช่นเดียวกับคนธรรมดาทั่วไปได้อีกด้วย ซึ่งพุทธศาสนาสายมหายานของญี่ปุ่นนั้นมองว่าแนวคิดนี้เป็นการผสานศาสนา หลักธรรม ให้เข้ากับวิถีชีวิตปุถุชนได้อย่างกลมกลืน นั่นจึงทำให้การปฏิรูปพุทธศาสนา วิถีปฏิบัติของสงฆ์ ตลอดจนการเผยแผ่ศาสนาในญี่ปุ่นมีรูปแบบเฉพาะตัวไม่เหมือนใคร
- โคโดะ นิชิมูระ (Kodo Nishimura / 西村 宏堂): สมณะญี่ปุ่นแหวกขนบผู้โด่งดังระดับสากลนี้เป็นพระ LGBTQ+ ที่มีอีกบทบาทเป็นช่างแต่งหน้ามือฉมังผู้รันวงการแฟชั่นและบันเทิงของญี่ปุ่นทั้งยังเป็น Makeup Artist ชื่อดังระดับโลกที่เคยร่วมงานกับองค์กรระดับสากลมากมาย รวมถึงเคยเป็นช่างแต่งหน้าให้เวทีนางงามอย่าง Miss Universe มาแล้วด้วย ตลอดจนเป็นเจ้าของผลงานเขียนท้าทายสังคมที่ถูกนำไปแปลเป็นหนังสือขายดีระดับสากลอย่าง “This monk wears heels” นั่นเอง
แน่นอนว่าประเด็นนี้ถูกถกเถียงในวงกว้างถึงความเหมาะสม แต่ในยุคที่สังคมเปิดกว้างและยอมรับความหลากหลายประเด็นนี้กลับกลายเป็นแง่บวกเสียมากกว่า แล้วก็อาจเป็นแรงบันดาลใจที่ทำให้พระญี่ปุ่นหลายรูปลุกขึ้นมาโชว์ศักยภาพของตนเองอีกด้านและนำมาผสมผสานให้เข้ากับวิถีสมณะอย่างลงตัว
พระกับดนตรีและความบันเทิงเริงรมย์
ธรรมเนียมดั้งเดิมในพุทธศาสนานอกจากเรื่องพระกับสีกาจะเป็นสิ่งต้องห้ามแล้ว เรื่องคีตะ (ดนตรีและการขับร้อง) ก็ยังถือเป็นกิเลสทางโลกอันมัวเมาที่เป็นเรื่องต้องห้ามสำหรับภิกษุเช่นกัน ทว่าสงฆ์ในนิกายมหายานของญี่ปุ่นกลับปฏิรูปให้อยู่นอกเหนือกฎนี้ทั้งปวง ไม่ใช่เรื่องใหม่ที่พระญี่ปุ่นใช้ดนตรีและเพลงมาเป็นสื่อกลางในการเผยแผ่ศาสนาเช่นเดียวกันกับศาสนาคริสต์ ทว่ายุคปัจจุบันการเผยแผ่ถูกพลิกโฉมและปรับเปลี่ยนให้ทันกระแสคนรุ่นใหม่ แน่นอนว่าเกิดคำถามตามมามากมายว่าวิถีธรรมะสร้างสรรค์รูปแบบใหม่นี้ … เหมาะสมจริงหรือ
- พระคันโฮ ยาคุชิจิ (Kanho Yakushiji / 薬師寺寛邦): ภิกษุศิลปินชื่อดังผู้กำลังเป็นกระแสฮือฮาและโด่งดังไปทั่วโลกกับปรากฎการณ์เผยแผ่ธรรมฉีกขนบผ่านการออกซิงเกิลและทัวร์คอนเสิร์ต ท่านเป็นนักดนตรีและหลงใหลในฮิปฮอปมานานจนนำเอาความสามารถนี้มาปรับเปลี่ยนพระสูตรและบทสวดในศาสนาพุทธให้กลายเป็นซิงเกิล “ปรัชญาปารมิตาหฤทัยสูตร” บทสวดร่วมสมัย ไปจนถึงสร้างสรรค์เพลงธรรมะยุคใหม่จนกลายเป็นซิงเกิลกลิ่นอายฮิปฮอปฟังสบายอย่าง “Satori” ที่ไพเราะและฮิตติดหูอย่างรวดเร็ว ไม่เพียงแต่จะเผยแผ่ธรรมผ่านสตรีมมิ่งมิวสิคบนแพลตฟอร์มดังทั่วโลกเท่านั้นท่านยังสวมชุดนักบวชเพอร์ฟอร์มไลฟ์ตลอดจนเปิดคอนเสิร์ตโซโล่กีตาร์ไปพร้อมกับร้องเพลงบนเวทีได้อย่างสนุกสนานมันส์หยดด้วย เพอร์ฟอร์มระดับมือโปรที่มีเสน่ห์นี้ทำให้ท่านโด่งดังไปทั่วโลกอย่างรวดเร็วไม่แพ้ศิลปินคนไหน ทั้งยังมีกระแสชื่นชมและแฟนคลับล้นหลามจนทำให้เกิดทัวร์คอนเสิร์ต “Blessing” World Tour 2023 รอบโลกแล้วต่อด้วย Kanho Yakushiji “Satori” Asia Tour 2024 ทั่วเอเชียซึ่งหนึ่งในเมืองที่ถูกบรรจุไว้ในตารางทัวร์คอนเสิร์ตครั้งนี้ก็คือกรุงเทพฯ ด้วยนั่นเอง
- โยเก็ตสึ อากาซากะ (Yogetsu Akasaka / 赤坂陽月): ศิลปินสงฆ์อีกหนึ่งรูปที่โด่งดังไม่แพ้กัน พระญี่ปุ่นนิกายเซ็นรุ่นใหม่ไฟแรงรูปนี้หลงใหลในดนตรีบีตบ็อกซ์ (Beatboxing) และนำพรสวรรค์นี้มาผสมผสานเข้ากับหลักธรรมทางศาสนาแล้วสร้างสรรค์ออกมาเป็นรูปแบบดนตรีอิเล็กโทรนิกส์มันส์เร้าใจตลอดจนเชื่อโยงกับการเผยแผ่ธรรมยุคดิจิตอลที่เข้าถึงคนรุ่นใหม่ได้อย่างรวดเร็วและกลมกลืน นอกจากนี้ท่านก็ยังสวมชุดนักบวชขึ้นเพอร์ฟอร์มดนตรีไปพร้อมกับแสงสีโมชันกราฟิก (Motion Graphic) ล้ำสมัยที่ได้ใจคนรุ่นใหม่ไปเต็มๆ แน่นอนว่าท่านก็เป็นศิลปินสงฆ์อีกรูปที่ออกทัวร์คอนเสิร์ตรอบโลกแถมยังเคยแวะมาเพอร์ฟอร์มที่เมืองไทยแล้วด้วยเช่นกัน
ปรากฏการ์ณเผยแพร่ธรรมผ่านดนตรีในแวดวงศาสนาเหล่านี้กำลังถูกตั้งคำถามมากมาย ขณะเดียวกันอีกด้านต่างก็ยกย่องให้ปรากฎการณ์นี้เป็นหมุดหมายสำคัญของการเปลี่ยนผ่านศาสนายุคดั้งเดิมเพื่อก้าวสู่ศาสนายุคอนาคต เพื่อส่งต่อศรัทธาและความเชื่อสู่คนรุ่นหลังต่อไป
พระกับศิลปะและสื่อธรรมะสร้างสรรค์
อีกหนึ่งการเผยแผ่แบบดั้งเดิมก็คือการจารึกพระไตรปิฎกตลอดจนจัดทำหนังสือธรรมมะกระจายความรู้ ทว่าการเผยแผ่ยุคใหม่สามารถปรับเปลี่ยนเป็นสื่อหลากหลายรูปแบบซึ่งหนึ่งในนั้นก็คือการ์ตูนธรรมะนั่นเอง สำหรับญี่ปุ่นแล้ววัฒนธรรมมังงะถือเป็นซอฟท์พาวเวอร์ทรงอิทธิพลทั้งในประเทศและทั่วโลก แน่นอนว่าก็มีพระบางรูปที่หยิบป๊อบคัลเจอร์นี้มาเจาะกลุ่มคนรุ่นใหม่เช่นกัน
- โยชิยูกิ คอนโดะ (Yoshiyuki Kondo / 近藤義行): พระนักวาดการ์ตูนมือฉมังผู้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานการ์ตูนสอนธรรมะยุคใหม่เรื่อง ヤンキーと住職 (Yankee to Jushoku) ที่แปลว่า “สังฆราชปะทะแยงกี้โฉด (Bad Boy and Chief Priest)” อันเป็นเรื่องราวของมิตรภาพที่ไม่น่าจะมาเจอกันได้ระหว่างพระภิกษุหนุ่มกับนักเรียนชายผู้เป็นสมาชิกแก๊งมอเตอร์ไซค์ที่เป็นเหตุให้เกิดเรื่องราวสนุกมากมาย โดยแฝงเนื้อธรรมะผ่านการเขียนบทได้อย่างแยบยลทีเดียว
พระกับธุรกิจและศาสนพาณิชย์
พระกับเรื่องเงินๆ ทองๆ ในสายหินยานนั้นเป็นสิ่งผิดวินัยสงฆ์ทว่าสำหรับสายมหายานนั้นพุทธพาณิชย์ถือเป็นสัมมาอาชีวะที่พระภิกษุพึงกระทำได้อย่างถูกต้องตามหลักของพุทธศาสนาแบบญี่ปุ่นเช่นกัน นอกจากศาสนกิจตลอดจนพิธีกรรมต่างๆ แล้ว ทั้งศาสนาพุทธและชินโตในญี่ปุ่นต่างก็ปรับตัวหลากหลายรูปแบบให้เข้ากับยุคสมัย ตลอดจนประกอบธุรกิจเพื่อเลี้ยงองค์กรและคณะสงฆ์ให้อยู่รอดเฉกเช่นเดียวกันกับสาธุชนทั่วไป
- TSUMUGI cafe: คาเฟ่แห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ภายในวัดซึคิจิ ฮอนกันจิ (Tsukiji Hongwaji / 築地本願寺) กลางกรุงโตเกียว จุดเช็คอินยอดนิยมนี้ไม่ใช่การให้คนนอกมาเช่าพื้นที่ทำธุรกิจแต่นี่เป็นตัววัดเองที่ประกอบกิจการเปิดคาเฟ่เก๋เพื่อดึงดูดคนให้เข้าวัดมากขึ้นแล้วก็เพื่อหาทุนเข้าวัดไปพร้อมกัน ภายในร้านนั้นตกแต่งทันสมัยน่านั่งไม่แพ้คาเฟ่ไหนๆ แต่ความพิเศษไม่เหมือนใครก็คือการเสิร์ฟเซ็ตอาหารเช้าเพื่อสุขภาพตำรับดั้งเดิมของวัดที่เป็นสำรับจัดถวายพระสงฆ์มาแต่โบราณ นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีส่วน Tea Louge เสิร์ฟชายามบ่ายให้แวะมาจิบเคล้าขนมหวาน รวมถึงเสิร์ฟดินเนอร์มื้อค่ำพร้อมเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์ให้ได้ลิ้มลองกันอีกด้วย
- Creative Omamori: อีกตัวอย่างของศาสนพาณิชย์ที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมากก็คือ “โอมาโมริ (Omamori / お守り)” วัตถุมงคลสายมูตลอดจนเครื่องรางของขลังเสริมสิริมงคล นอกจากรูปแบบดั้งเดิมแล้วปัจจุบันยังมีการสร้างสรรค์โอมาโมริขึ้นมาหลากหลายรูปแบบ ปรับดีไซน์ให้น่ารักหรือเก๋เท่ทันสมัยเพื่อเอาใจคนรุ่นใหม่และปรับโฉมให้กลายเป็นของใช้ประจำวันที่ไม่ขัดเขิน (อย่างเช่นแขวนเป็นพวกกุญแจ) นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีบริษัทตลอดจนแบรนด์ต่างๆ สร้างสรรค์เครื่องรางนำโชคขึ้นมามากมายที่มีส่วนช่วยทำให้โอมาโมริกลายเป็นไอเท็มเก๋เท่อินเทรนด์ แถมอีกด้านก็ยังกลายมาเป็นของฝากยอดนิยมสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่กลายเป็นซอฟพาวเวอร์เลื่องชื่อไปพร้อมกัน
ธุรกิจที่ศาสนาประกอบการนั้นมีตั้งแต่เรื่องที่เชื่อมโยงกับความเชื่อและศรัทธาโดยตรง ไปจนถึงเรื่องธุรกิจทั่วไปที่ไม่ต่างจากคนทั่วไปในสังคมดำเนินการ หากแนวความคิดนี้ทำเพื่อแสวงหากำไรคงมีคนลุกขึ้นมาถวงถามมากมายว่าบทบาทของศาสนาที่เหมาะที่ควรนั้นคืออะไร ขณะเดียวกันศาสนาก็อาจตั้งคำถามกลับเช่นกันว่าศรัทธาผู้คนที่เปลี่ยนไปจากยุคก่อนจะเกื้อหนุนศาสนาให้ยืนหยัดสืบต่อไปได้อย่างไรเช่นกัน
ศาสนายุคดิจิตอล
การเข้าสู่ยุคดิจิตอลทำให้ศาสนาก็ถึงคราวต้องปรับตัว การสืบทอดหรือเผยแผ่หลักธรรมจึงต้องปรับตามวิถีและความก้าวหน้าที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ในยุคของ Digital Disruption ทางด้านศาสนาก็ได้รับผลกระทบไม่แพ้เรื่องอื่น ทว่าเรื่องที่ศาสนาลุกขึ้นมาปรับตัวตามให้ทันเทคโนโลยีอาจไม่ยากเท่ากับการสร้างศรัทธาให้เข้าถึงคนยุคใหม่ตลอดจนรักษาศรัทธาคนยุคเก่าให้คงเดิม
- Mindar (マインダー): การเผยแผ่ศาสนารูปแบบใหม่นี้กลายเป็นปรากฎการณ์สร้างความฮือฮาระดับโลกเมื่อวัดพุทธนิกายเซ็นอันเก่าแก่อย่างวัดโคไดจิ (Kodaiji / 高台寺) ในเกียวโตลุกขึ้นมาเปลี่ยนโฉมหน้าวงการศาสนาให้ล้ำสมัยด้วยการเปิดตัวพระหุ่นยนต์แอนดรอยด์ควบคุมโดยปัญญาประดิษฐ์ (AI) ซึ่งสามารถแสดงธรรม ให้พร ไปจนถึงเผยแผ่ศาสนาประกอบเทคโนโลยีล้ำสมัยได้อย่างน่าสนใจทีเดียว
เหล่านี้คือส่วนหนึ่งของตัวอย่างของการปรับเปลี่ยนศรัทธาและความเชื่อให้กลมกลืนกับยุคสมัย ฝั่งที่ยึดถือแนวทางอนุรักษ์นิยมอาจมองว่าเป็นสิ่งไม่เหมาะสมและผิดขนบจนอาจทำให้ศาสนาเสื่อมถอยและตายไปในที่สุด ทว่าหากมองอีกด้านวิถีและวิธีการใหม่เหล่านี้ต่างหากที่จะทำให้ศาสนาก้าวสู่ยุคต่อไปพร้อมกับคนรุ่นต่อๆ ไปได้ แม้จะเปลี่ยนรูปโฉมไปจากเดิมไปบ้างก็ตาม
สรุปแล้วคนญี่ปุ่นยังคงนับถือเทพเจ้า, พระพุทธเจ้า, หรือพระเจ้าอยู่หรือไม่?
คุณเคยสงสัยไหมว่าทำไมคนญี่ปุ่นคนเดียวกันสามารถไหว้พระที่วัด ขอพรที่ศาลเจ้า และแต่งงานในโบสถ์คริสต์ได้ นี่คือเสน่ห์อันน่าหลงใหลของวิถีศรัทธาแบบญี่ปุ่นที่ซ้อนทับกันหลากหลายเลเยอร์แต่อยู่ร่วมกันอย่างไม่ขัดแย้ง ไม่จำกัดอยู่ในกรอบของศาสนาใดศาสนาหนึ่งทว่าผสมผสานทุกความเชื่อเข้าด้วยกันอย่างกลมกลืน
นั่นอาจเป็นที่มาของคำถามที่เราเกริ่นนำนี้ และมาถึงตรงจุดนี้อาจตอบได้ทั้ง “ใช่” และ “ไม่” แต่นั่นอาจไม่ใช่ประเด็นสำคัญเท่าจิตวิญญาณของชาวญี่ปุ่นที่ลึกๆ แล้วเปิดรับทุกความแตกต่างเข้ามาและปรับเปลี่ยนให้เข้ากับวิถีของตนอย่างกลมกลืน ดีเอ็นเอนี้ยังคือสืบต่อจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นตลอดไป การนับถือศาสนาตามแบบฉบับของคนญี่ปุ่นที่มีอัตลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนใครนี้อาจบ่งบอกได้ถึงวิธีการสืบทอดศาสนาแบบยืดหยุ่นที่แสนชาญฉลาดก็เป็นได้
